DeLloyd and DeLay Bliss 1845 oil on canvas (unsigned) attributed to Susan C. Waters
It is believed Susan Waters painted this picture when she was twenty-three years old. She was an itinerate portrait painter who worked in small towns in the southern tier of New York State and over the border in Pennsylvania. She typically posed children outdoors and framed their heads with dark foliage. Her treatment of the clothing is carefully detailed and the portrait shows a conscious sense of design and composition. Waters moved from folk portraiture to become a successful still life and animal painter.
DeLloyd and DeLay Bliss, ages nine and four respectively, lived on a farm near Cortland. DeLay died in 1846, at the age of five, the year after this portrait was painted.
The painting was a gift of the estate of Miss Eva Bliss.
