Lincoln Signature Stoddard While editor of the Central Illinois Gazette, Homer native William O. Stoddard (1835-1925) suggested Lincoln for president. Later he was appointed Lincoln’s third secretary during the Civil War years. Among his books for adults and children, he wrote Life of Lincoln.
Eli DeVoe Eli DeVoe (1809 - 1874) was born in Homer, New York. He played an important part in uncovering the alleged plot to assassinate President-elect Abraham Lincoln on route to his inauguration, known as the Baltimore Plot. He later served in the newly formed Secret Service through the Civil War.
